Flow - an Exhibition of mixed media and textile art

Flow is my second solo show following on from "Beginnings" in Castle Douglas in April of this year.

It runs from Wednesday 28th November to Saturday 8th December 2007
11am to 4pm daily, except Sunday

"Beginnings" was about what happens when we can at last reach a point of action, challenging the emotional and social constraints placed upon us, which have kept us in well- behaved and well-mannered boxes. In "Flow" I am reinforcing and moving forward the direction started earlier.

"Flow" is the unstoppable force that ensues when the first tearing free is done. It may start as a tentative trickle but inevitably, as the walls are breached, the outpourings will not be staunched.

An intense process of self-discovery is set in motion. There is a strong compulsion to throw oneself into the maelstrom, to explore and engage with layers of memory and experience that have shaped and formed me. I know that I must resist the desire to let it all wash over me and swamp me. I need to maintain the ability to question and challenge long-laid-down assumptions and constraints.

As I immerse myself in this flow, I am exploring working with a mixture of materials and techniques: hand-painted silks and muslins, manipulated fibres, machine and hand stitching. Increasingly I use stretched canvas as a basis for my work as I apply layers of colour and texture to express deep-rooted feelings and memories.
